Artist-in-Residence

Artist residencies at Grounds For Sculpture offer members of the community an all-encompassing and immersive art experience. Working with an artist to help create and build a work of art gives the public a first-hand look into the creative world of a contemporary artist from vision to the product.

Beginning October 2010

This image is an example of Schultz's work. Sculpture being
built during his residency will differ.

Beginning in October 2010, Grounds For Sculpture will host Artist in Residence, Eric Schultz.  Schultz is an emerging local artist whose works focus on the reuse of discarded materials.  With the help of community volunteers, Schultz will create a large sculpture at Grounds For Sculpture using discarded objects.

Schultz and Grounds For Sculpture will rely heavily on community volunteers to make this project a success.  To represent the community, Schultz is asking for donations of recycled materials, which can be from your household or neighborhood.  Schultz hopes this experience will force donators to look differently at the materials they use in their lives and the traditional materials that are used to make art.  People looking for a fun challenge can search the finished sculpture to see if their donations made it into the sculpture and if they can be seen.

Please consider donating used items to the Artist in Residence Project! Donated items may be dropped in large donation bins inside the Seward Johnson Center for the Arts Visitor's Center beginning July 2010.

Donation Wish List:

  • Any kind of tubing (plastic, metal, copper, etc.)
  • Electrical wire
  • Small machine parts (engines, motors, etc.)
  • Metal containers, such as cans
  • Colored plastic bottles or
  • Colorful 3-dimensional objects, either made of plastic or metal
  • Objects that have words that relate to the body

The sculpture will be built outdoors and all items donated need to withstand weather conditions.  Grounds For Sculpture cannot accept perishable items or hazardous waste (TVs, computers, glass, etc).

Volunteers are needed to assist with sorting objects, placement of objects, and light construction work of the sculpture.  This is a unique opportunity to work directly with an artist on a sculpture installation.  Familiarity with power tools is helpful but not required.

Construction of the sculpture will take place from October 11-15 and October 18-22, 2010.  Work will take place in two shifts: morning shift (10am-1pm) and afternoon shift (1-4pm).  If you would like to volunteer, please contact Elizabeth Berkowitz at 609.586.1182 to schedule your timeslot.

Past Artist Residencies Include...

Patrick Dougherty worked at the park to create an indoor exhibition from September 20-December 3, 2004. Over 200 community volunteers assisted the artist in constructing five site-specific sculptures for this exhibition by weaving tree saplings into large organic constructions. On October 22, 2004 Dougherty gave an artist talk and slide presentation, allowing visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the artistic process as well as an opportunity to talk with the artist.

New York artist Steven Siegel was in residence from September 11 through October 7, 2006. Siegel worked with students from Ewing High School, The College of New Jersey and residents of Anchor House to create three outdoor sculptural installations using indigenous post-consumer materials (recyclables). Siegel also gave an artist lecture on October 6, 2006 providing visitors with an opportunity to share and explore ideas about sculpture and contemporary arts through a discussion of his residency.
