This work by William Donnan, an artist from North Carolina, came to Grounds For Sculpture from Pier Walk ’98 in Chicago. Pinched, made from reinforced cement, is an abstract sculpture with a monochromatic brown pigmented finish that acts to unify the whole. The overall striated texture also forms a continuity throughout its surface. Solid, asymmetrical and angular sections appear to be stacked at one end of the work, and this dominant vertical section is counterbalanced by a thin cantilevered element. This horizontal thrust creates a tension between the plane of the ground and the sculpture, and another between the two divergent major components of the work.
Donnan has shown his sculptures in outdoor sites for years. During the 1990s his works were installed on college campuses, such as the University of North Carolina in Ashville, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and the University of South Carolina in Spartenburg. He has regularly participated in the Public Sculpture Project held at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, in the Tri-State Sculptors Guild Annual Exhibitions (held at various universities in the Carolinas), at the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, and in Washington Square exhibitions in Washington, D.C. Sculptures by this artist have also been on view at the Fayetteville Museum of Art in North Carolina, where the artist is represented in the collection, and the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill. |
